The Thyroid Gland is a soft, small Bow-shaped gland, located in the front of the neck, below the voice box or larynx (Adam’s Apple) on either side of the trachea (windpipe).

An Endocrine Surgeon is the specialist who performs a thyroidectomy. A total thyroidectomy is recommended for thyroid cancer, restriction caused by an enlarged thyroid gland pressing on the windpipe, oesophagus or nerves.

Iodine Deficiency

Iodine Deficiency is the commonest worldwide cause of thyroid disorders.  A low iodine diet can cause hypothyroidism, an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) and can affect fertility, pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders in newborns.
